Picture of my new camera

My new camera and lens came on Thursday August 22, 2002! I am so super-excited, I can hardly wait to get home and try them out. After a lot of research, and after talking to others whose opinions on photography I respect (namely my dad and Rob), I decided to buy the Canon EOS Elan7, without the lens kit. I also got a Sigma 28-200mm F3.5-5.6 compact hyperzoom lens. (!!!!!) I ordered both of them through B&H Photo Video online. They have a good selection, good prices, and a good reputation. That's good enough for me!

Would you believe, though, that I forgot to bring batteries? I knew this order was coming, and I had planned to prepare myself by stocking my purse with a roll of film and the right batteries for the camera. I KNEW that as soon as it arrived, I would want to start playing around with it. But no, of course I forgot to do any of that. Oh well, that's the way life goes sometimes I guess. I still got to put the lens on the body, and look through it, and attach the strap, and stuff like that. The rest will have to wait until later.

I am just so thrilled about having my own SLR camera! This body has both fully automatic modes and fully manual modes, as well as some "in betweens". For instance, I could set the camera to manual shutter speeds and f-stop, but leave automatic focus on. thamay not be a big deal to some, but I've been SO looking forward to having that kind of flexibility! The super-cool lens I bought

Until now, I have been using my aunt's fully manual camera. It's a 1980 Canon AE1. It takes lovely pictures, and I'm really grateful that she loaned it to me. If I hadn't borrowed that camera from her, I would never have taken the plunge to buy my own SLR. In fact, the only thing I didn't like about it was its lack of automatic functions. The AE1 is a great camera for taking photographs, but it was very hard for me to do snapshots. I just couldn't get the exposure settings the way I wanted fast enough to be practical. With the Elan 7, I have the flexibility to use the fully automatic modes for snapshots AND use the manual modes for more creative control.

I hope the camera lives up to my expectations! I'll post some pictures to my online gallery as soon as I get them developed.
