Daughter of the Forest, by Juliet Marillier

Image of book cover

This engaging book, the first in a trilogy, is a new interpreation of a traditional Grimm Brothers fairy tale. The tale of the Six Swans is retold here, and skillfully expanded to full novel length. Set in pagan Ireland, this story centers around the close-knit family of Lord Colum of Sevenwaters.

Sorcha is the seventh child of Lord Colum, sister to six older brothers. When an enchantment dooms her brothers to take the form of swans, only young Sorcha, through her own long pain and suffering, can bring them back to their human form.

This is the kind of book I find hard to put down. The tale was so intriguing, and the language was so evocative, it was a joy to read! Even though I know the fairy tale of the Six Swans, Marillier's plot was never predictable. I can't wait to get to the next book in this series.
