Visiting Eric and Margaret

jake playing

In January, I went up to Eric and Margaret's place with Mom and Bill for a weekend. Well, actually, it was about 24 hours that we were there. We didn't see their family at Christmas this year, so we took Christmas to them! I wish we could have visited longer, but that wouldn't work out this time. We drive up on a Saturday morning, arriving around 1:00. Jake immediately commandeered my attention for a series of crazy games that involved running around the house. I, the doting auntie, was of course pleased to oblige. My favorite game was one of Jake's invention. It was a lot like hide and seek, but with an interesting twist. The "hider" would take with him or her an embroidered dinosaur pillow. When the "hider" was found by the "seeker", the hider had to jump out and try to tag the seeker with the pillow. The seeker would run screaming and try not to get caught. When the seeker DID get caught, he or she was required to die a dramatic death, complete with falling on the ground and letting the tongue hang out. Then we switched places and started all over again.

The new place is not too far away from the old place, but it's bigger and has a great yard! When we saw it, it had outside walls, roof, and windows. The rooms were all roughed in inside, but there were no finishes yet. No carpet, no drywall, no cabinets...all those things were still to come. My favorite feature in the new house will be the corner sink in the kitchen. The corner with the sink in it will have windows on both walls, and I just LOVE sinks that look out over the outside. I think it gives you something fun to look at while doing boring things like washing dishes.

When we got back, it was time for dinner. Emily is starting to eat more and more solid food, but she wasn't too interested in it that night. Eric and Margaret kept trying to feed her, and she kept spitting it out! She still looked darn cute, though.

Jake is just the smartest kid. I was so impressed by his knowledge of dinosaurs. For a four-year-old, he's got a substantial knowledge base of dinsaur lore. He knows all their scientific names, and whether they are carnivores or herbivores or omnivores. And he knows what all those terms mean! He has LOTS of dinosaur toys, and he likes to group them together in families. It's really sweet. The big ones usually help the little ones. He's just a terrific kid. What a nephew!

We stayed overnight, and ate breakfast with the family the next morning. Jake lined all his dinosaurs up by my feet. He said they were lining up at a watering hole. (I'm tellin' ya...this is one terrific, smart kid!) After breakfast, we had to get ready to drive home. It was hard to leave after such a short visit. I had so much fun playing with the kids, and talking with Eric and Margaret...I hope we can get together again soon.
