The Great Kitchen Painting Event, or What Makes a Girl Turn...Neutral?

picture of neutral kitchen

To start at the beginning of the story, I bought a townhouse last summer. The whole house was painted in plain whitey-beige, except for one room, which was (and still is) a disturbing shade of bright, Winnie-The-Pooh yellow. Luckily, that room serves as my office and the guest room, so the color really doesn't intrude in my life too much (I inflict it on my nearest and dearest, as they sleep, instead. Hopefully, it hasn't disturbed anyone's sleep.) But back to the story...

The white walls were one of the first things I wanted to change about the place when I moved in. I chose a pretty, clear light blue for the living room and foyer, and what I THOUGHT was a cheerful Granny-Smith-apple green for the kitchen. I think "crisp" was the word I was using to describe my decorating scheme at the time. I invited a bunch of friends over to paint the walls, and, when we were done, I was left with a crisp, airy, open-feeling living room...and a pastel green kitchen that DIDN'T charm me. I held the paint chip in my hand and I could not believe how different the paint looked on the wall. Instead of bright, I got pastel. And instead of vibrant, I got dull. Someone described it as "Shamrock Shake Green". This was not the apple green I had envisioned!

After a year, I decided I had had enough of the green kitchen. In order to make my appliances and counters blend into the room better, I chose an off-white paint for the walls. The not-so-fantastic appliances would fade into the background, and I could really show off the blue and white pottery and dishes that I love so much.

So...that's what I did! Rob and my mom came and helped me repaint the kitchen. They are such troopers! Mom helped paint, even with her busticated ankle. (Everybody now...Awwwwwwww...) The end result was nice and neutral. I got the kitchen cleaned up, and put my stuff back in there, and I am very pleased.

P.S. Tabby says blue and white are her FAVORITE kitchen colors. Here she poses gracefully with the cool blue and white rug that Grandma Amling gave me.
